What i need to know before exporting products

What do I need to know before I start exporting products?

While exporting your products can lead to many new opportunities for your business, if you’re new to the world of exporting it can become a little overwhelming. Here are some important resources you’ll need to check before you start exporting your products.

Exporting Prohibited Goods

There are some certain goods that the Australian Government prohibit from being exported, however there are some instances where some of these prohibited goods can be exported. It involves having written permission and meeting certain conditions and requirements. Australian Border Force has further information about prohibited goods.

Australian Export Requirements

Businesses that export need to comply with requirements set out by Australian Border Force (ABF) and the exported goods are subject to customs control. One of the important requirements is an Export Declaration, which an exporter must give to the ABF.  Export Declarations can be submitted electronically or over the counter, however if you don’t export your goods within 30 days of the intended export date in your declaration then you’ll have to withdraw your Export Declaration within 7 days. Using the services of a custom broker or agent can be very helpful when your business starts exporting.

Export Documentation

You must have all your documentation in order and complete when you start exporting. The documents needed will vary depending on the goods you are exporting and where you’re exporting to. They might include written permission if exporting prohibited goods, insurance certificates, certificate of origin, export permits, bills of lading and bills of exchange. You’ll find the import documents required for each market on the Austrade websiteAustrade provides free and detailed information for Australian companies about exporting and doing business in international markets. Their website is extremely helpful!

Export Market Development Grants

Austrade has an Export Market Development Grants (EMDG) program and it’s worth checking to see if you are eligible. The program helps small to medium Australian businesses grow internationally through export.

Export Fact Sheets and Research

There are some helpful fact sheets on the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)website that provide an economic snapshot of countries and regions. DFAT also provide information about free trade agreements, including a Free Trade Agreement Portal with extra information for first time exporters.

After you begin exporting and time goes on don’t forget to keep up to date on both the Australian requirements and the requirements for the country/market you’re exporting to.
